Phil Spector sentenced to 18 years

After about 30 hours of deliberation, a jury on Monday convicted music producer Phil Spector of second-degree murder in the death of actress Lana Clarkson more than six years ago.

Wearing a black suit with a red tie and pocket square, Spector showed no reaction as the verdict was announced. Now 69, he faces a sentence of 18 years to life in prison when he is sentenced May 29.

Asked if he agreed to the sentencing date, Spector quietly answered, "Yes."

Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler declined to allow Spector to remain free on bail pending sentencing, citing Spector's years-long "pattern of violence" involving firearms.

if you are in the los angeles area, i encourage you to stop by the los feliz clothing boutique, confederacy, located at hollywood and vermont. the design of the store is delicious, the selection of designer goods will knock your socks off, the staff are friendly and look very sharp in their rag and bone uniforms and the show that is presently hanging on their walls is by a lovely fellow called eric ray davidson. eric is a talented young successful fashion photographer and his work is fucking sick. his shots are found in GQ every month and at 27, his credentials and quality of work are beyond impressive. the piece below (entitled "jessica stam blows") was shot as part of his series during new york city's fashion week. it was purchased by yours truly with the bathroom wall of my loft in mind. selections from this show here. more on eric here and here.

Prince will release not one, but three albums in the new year. He's in final negotiations with "a major retailer" to distribute the music in physical form, and a highly interactive website will also provide an opportunity to buy. He's not working with a record label. "The gatekeepers have to change," he said several times throughout the evening.
He's found his way back to the sound of "When Doves Cry." The first disc, tentatively titled "MPLSOUND," is an electro-flavored solo effort recorded at Paisley Park Studios. Prince experimented with Pro Tools and "new ways of recording" on these trippy, experimental pop songs. One features a Q-Tip rap; another calls a "Funky Congregation" to worship and may become a live set piece.

He's ready to revive the Quiet Storm. "We got sick of waiting for Sade to make a new album," he said, introducing Valente's new album, "Elixir." The tracks are chill, with Valente's buttery voice melding with beats by Morris Hayes and Prince's guitar lines. Some are explicitly sexual. "This music is nasty, but it's not dirty," Prince said, explaining how sensual music fits in with his much-discussed faith -- he's a Jehovah's Witness. "There's no profanity. It isn't promoting promiscuity. She's singing about her lover, who could be her partner for life."

A local inventor and businessman will have his 15 minutes of fame tonight.
And each of those minutes will be measured by his unique, eco-friendly clock.

The Bedol Eco-Friendly Water-Powered Clock will be presented to Golden Globe nominees tonight on the television show "Access Hollywood," said Mark Bedol, the clock's creator.

Bedol has stores at The Shoppes at Chino Hills and in Claremont at 456 W. First St.

"I am waiting anxiously to see the show because, from what I understand, 'Access Hollywood' really is going to give us a nice bit of publicity," said Bedol, who lives in Claremont.

The show will air at 7:30 tonight on KNBC (Channel 4).

The clock - which is powered by tap water and lemon juice - is a brightly-colored timepiece with a circular design.

The clock eliminates the need for batteries.

Bedol holds a number of patents for different designs.

They include the Checkmaster, which is a checkbook calculator that can simultaneously balance three checking accounts, he said.

Bedol also has designed a line of school supplies.

Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh has cast precocious porn star Sasha Grey as the lead in his upcoming feature, "The Girlfriend Experience."

The low-budget drama, currently shooting in Gotham, chronicles the life of a high-price call girl, is part of Soderbergh's six-pic deal with multimedia entrepreneur Mark Cuban. Pic was written by "Ocean's 13" scribes Brian Koppelman and David Levien and will bow under the Magnolia Pictures shingle.

The 20-year-old Grey entered the skin biz just after her 18th birthday and has appeared in scores of XXX flicks. In January she became the youngest recipienct of AVN's Female Performer of the Year award.

For Grey, who lists Jean-Luc Godard, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Catherine Breillat among her favorite filmmakers, "Girlfriend" will be her third legit film appearance in 2009, having notched small parts in Dick Rude's indie "Quit" and Canadian horror project "Smash Cut."

"To have the opportunity to work for an Academy Award-winning auteur is truly a great honor," Grey told AVN. "I've been an admirer of Soderbergh's films for years, and I am elated that I have been given a leading role in a character-driven film."
